Health Coaching

Health

Health — it’s big business. All of us have been affected in some way by the current global health care crisis. Costs are skyrocketing. Obesity, diabetes and chronic diseases are out of control.

So, what can we do about it, and how does health coaching fit into the picture? Well, what I like to say is that as a health coach I create a strategic alliance with my clients that enables them to effortlessly achieve their goals in such areas as weight loss, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and eliminating addictive behaviors. You see, according to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, “Seventy percent of all diseases are lifestyle-related,” and thus can be changed — and that’s where the services of a health coach come into play.

Dr. Mehmet Oz recently told the US Senate that we need Health Coaches. And in a CNN interview, Dr.Oz reported that health coaches should be a part of every public clinic, medical office and hospital wellness center and should be reimbursed by insurance companies & corporate wellness programs.

According to Peter J. Weiss, MD FACP, “Coaches are prepared and ready to help you with your lifestyle goals in a way that doctors are not. As a doctor, I prescribe a coach.”

And Dr. Andrew Weil says that “When athletes want a competitive edge, they hire a private coach to monitor their progress. When it comes to your health, using this mindset could also be beneficial.”

“People want to be more in control of their health but they may not have the resources, information, or professional guidance to be successful,” said Jan Maurer, MD, Vice President & Medical Director, Health Dialog. “We believe health coaching is a critical and proven part of the solution and can help people change their lifestyles to improve their health. A Health Coach can help people understand and overcome barriers to healthy behaviors. Our goal is to help people gain the skills and motivation they need to fit health into their day-to-day priorities.”

HealthCoachTraining.com is my training institution. In this program, students learn the fundamentals of various aspects of health and wellness and how to customize these concepts to the individual client. The curriculum includes classes on Reducing Stress, Managing Weight, Smoking Cessation, Exercise, Eating Healthier, Coping with Chronic Health Conditions and how to make other health related behavioral changes based on proven scientific models.

Health Coaching is intended to help people make and adhere to meaningful lifestyle changes through the development of a supportive relationship that can help to facilitate behavior change and attain goals. We focus on the health of the whole person which includes physical health but also meaningful relationships, a fulfilling career, positive energy, spirituality and balance.

Here’s the philosophy we stand by at HealthCoachTraining.com — HCT adheres to a form of coaching that honors the client as the expert in his (her) personal and/or professional life and believes that every client has natural gifts and talents that allow him to solve most if not all of his problems. Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:

  1. Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
  2. Encourage client self-discovery
  3. Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
  4. Hold the client as responsible and accountable
